Description
Allington Castle is situated in Allington, just north of Maidstone, Kent. The oldest part of the castle shows a distinctive herringbone pattern which is still visible today. The castle is now the private residence and is not open to the public. It is a Grade I listed building.

History
The castle was built in 1281 as a stone moated castle when Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Stephen of Penchester, was granted a licence to crenellate by Edward I. It was converted to a mansion in 1492 when the Wyatt family acquired the property. The castle was badly damaged by fire in the late 16th century and was abandoned until 1905 when it was restored by Sir Martin Conway. In 1951 the castle became home to a convent of the Order of Carmelites

The Arts
Allington Castle was used for the exterior shots for the 1992 TV series Covington Cross. In 1965 it was used as a location for "Castel De'ath" in TV series The Avengers.
