Newbury, Berkshire, England

Donnington Castle is located in the village of the same name north of Newbury in the county of Berkshire.

The castle is now in ruins but the gatehouse is still standing three storeys tall. You can still see the star shaped earthworks. The walls of the castle have been rebuilt to about half a metre in height to show the outline the original shape of the castle.

Donnington Castle was built in the 14th century around 1386. The castle was damaged during the First English Civil War, when it was held by the Royalists and fell after an 18 month siege. It was demolished in 1646 with only the gatehouse left standing. The castle is now protected by English Heritage and is a scheduled ancient monument.
