Location
Ballater, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Description
Knock Castle is situated west of the town of Ballatar on Deeside, Aberdeenshire. It was built in the early 17th Century and a former stronghold of the Gordons. The castle is an oblong tower (keep) four storeys high with no wings. It once had a vaulted basement which has now collapsed. The east and south corners have circular angle turrets supported on corbelling, and the west facing corner has a square corbelled watch chamber. The castle is now cared for by Historic Scotland

Legends
According to tradition, in the 17th century raiders from the Forbes family killed all seven of Alexander Gordon's sons while they were digging peats. On hearing the news, Alexander fell down the castle stairs and died.
